She floated through cloud, pearl grey. Beyond it, all was black. All around her, white flashed, a storm danced through the cotton-like formations, beckoning her, awakening static in her lips and fingertips.
On she drifted, thunder rumbling far below, fighting for dominance with the howling wind.
The cloud shifted, fading to a fog, and beneath her feet she felt sodden grass that smelled of a recent rainfall. There were whispers here. It wasn’t just the breeze through the trees, but the hushed voices of strangers. They were talking of a tragedy, and worse things yet to come.
“What happened?” she called, her voice unnaturall
